Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue is massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish Massage, but it is more of a therapeutic technique so the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots.
Deep tissue is likely to be a bit more uncomfortable than a classic Swedish massage. You should always feel free to speak up if the pressure is too much for you. Many people ask for more pressure, thinking that if the therapist just pushes hard enough, they can get rid of all their knots in an hour. Although you will see improvement, overdoing it wont get better results. Undoing chronic knots and tension build up takes a regular routine devised by your therapist based on your lifestyle and overall physical condition.
Swedish
Swedish Massage is the most popular form of massage for those who are looking for more of a relaxing experience rather than therapeutic although it does offer some therapeutic benefits.
Swedish massage consists of long, continuous strokes at a medium to light pressure. Friction and kneading techniques are also included to relax the muscles. This form of massage promotes relaxation, improves circulation, relieves muscle tension and improves muscle tone and flexibility.
Sports
Sports Massage is a special form of massage and is typically used before, during, and after athletic events. The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries.
The main purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body's soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively. Sports massage can help prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether a person is an athlete or a once a week jogger.
Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage
Lomi Lomi is a holistic healing tradition beyond simple massage and is probably one of the oldest and most powerful forms of healing.
This is a type of massage that has been practiced in Hawaii for centuries, tracing its roots to the ancient Polynesians. They believed in the philosophy called "Huna," which says that everything in the world "seeks harmony and love."
Practitioners of the said massage use very large, broad, and flowing movements, usually by way of both forearms and elbows. This technique covers a wide area of the body. Most of the massage movements are focused on the muscles to promote a continuous flow of energy.
